The Argus Camera Company of Ann Arbor, Michigan

Hey Argus fans – here’s a post with information about the Argus Museum and an event they are having!

Old Foundation by Mark O’Brien

Lighthouse ruins at Cheboygan State Park, MI, taken with Argus C3 by Mark O’Brien

It’s apparently O’Brien week here on Michigan in Pictures. Yesterday we had a photo from Marjorie and then I received an unrelated email from her dad. He was passing along a request from Bob and Mary Kay Berg of Palindrome Productions:

Our production company, Palindrome Productions, is working on a short film about the Argus Camera Company, originally based in Ann Arbor, MI. To supplement our video footage, we are currently looking for still photos taken by Argus cameras models from 1936 to 1960.

If you have family photos (everyday events, family vacations, recitals, holidays) or photos of Ann Arbor, please contact us no later than Friday, April 13, 2007 at palindromevideo@aol.com.

I’ve never been one to look a gift blog post in the mouth, so without further delay – and with copious thanks to Mark for the links – I bring you:

About the Argus Camera Company of Ann Arbor, Michigan

Argus C3 by Luke HWikipedia’s very much incomplete entry on the Argus Camera Company says:

Argus is an American maker of cameras and photographic products, founded in 1936 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Argus originated as a subsidiary of the International Radio Corporation (IRC), founded by Charles Verschoor. Its best-known product was the C3 rangefinder camera, which enjoyed a 27-year production run and became one of the top-selling cameras in history. The company’s Model A was the first low-cost 35 mm camera in the United States.

The link above for the Argus C3 (aka “The Brick”) is much more complete and says the simple design and ready availability of the C3 makes it widely used even today. While that entry says the C3 was responsible for establishing 35mm, Stephen Gandy of CameraQuest hands that title to the first camera Argus made – the Argus A, declaring:

Argus SS Notches by ReyGuyIn MY always not so objective mind at least, the Argus A is undoubtedly the 2nd most important 35mm camera of all time– second only to the Leica A. If you think about it, that’s a pretty amazing legacy for a simple little Bakelite camera from a Michigan USA radio factory. It really is.

How does Argus deserve this impressive ranking? Easy, they bribed me. Unfortunately, not with money. Argus paid me off in Photographic Heritage. Building on the astounding sellout success of the Argus A, Argus sold MILLIONS of Argi, thereby establishing 35mm as the serious Amateur’s film format of choice in the largest photography market in the world, America.

If you are interested in repairing, collecting or just learning more about any of the Argus camera models and their accessories, look no further than the Argus Collectors Group. You can get a quicker overview of the Argus line over at Mark’s Argus Cameras Page. Mark also took visit to the Argus Museum located at the old Argus Factory in Ann Arbor and (go figure) he took some photos.

There are a TON of very cool Argus camera advertisements (I learned that Galileo was a 17th century Argus and am definitely going to get an Argus A to take to the next World’s Fair), some detail shots of the cameras on his projects page and the results of a Spring Fever Argus photo contest over at Alexander Rawles argoflex.com. Speaking of photos , you can see some shots of the camera and from the cameras in the Argus Rangefinders Group on Flickr.End of the gumshoe's day by Olivander

You might also want to check the local bookstore for a copy of Argomania: A Look At Argus Cameras And The Company That Made Them by Henry Gambino. The promotional copy explains:

Argus’ founder, Charles Verschoor, did not establish an empire, as did George Eastman. Nor did he enjoy a particularly long tenure as the head of the company he founded. Unlike Oscar Barnack, he did not invent anything particularly new, yet he had a tremendous impact on the photographic industry. He revolutionized the scope of the industry, not only from a technical standpoint, but even more so from a marketing perspective.

  1. Andy — GREAT synopsis, and thanks for spreading the word about Argus. Most people today don’t realize the effect of that company, and there is an Argus Museum at the old Argus Factory in Ann Arbor, owned by C3 Partners/ONeal Construction. I encourage people to pay a visit if they can.

    2. Hey there C3ers, there is a lot to consider in all of these articles about Argus and its contribution over time, to the photog. world. In 1952 my Uncle who helped with the development of the “C3-brick” took me aside at his Father’s home on S. 7th St. when I was only 4 years of age. I am from LA and had just moved to Ann Arbor to stay with my Grandfather as my Grandmother was having serious health issues at that time. I had no idea what Uncle Stan was going to do with my time at that point in my life, as Stan aka ‘Stosh’, well known at Argus Camera where I used to visit him to watch him “machine” all the lenses for the brick. Many people will dispute my claims as I am an inventor of many things and even worked for WED. People refute that my other Grandfather, on the Detroit side of the family invented the first ball point pen. I reference this because STOSH gave me the very first SOLAR PANEL that day on South 7th, which he helped develop at Argusto power the C3 Flash side-unit. I no longer have the first C-3 he made as I surrendered it to a friend when I went into the USAF in ’67, but I still have that solar panel that plugged into that camera! My Uncle and myself are purists in the sense that we both developed prototypes for many things industries. My claim to fame, and there are many, is the first Visual Accuity Machine, which I developed and built the prototype for, which was not like Bausch & Lomb construction in any way… Since the Project Chief of this endeavor was the Inventor of CinemaScope, (also disputed) I made a special effort to not only build the prototype but write the computer program that made it work. Speaking of work…? Yes, pioneering is all about that! My Uncle retired from Argus after I moved back to California to go to a very good school then, USC’s SAFA. During the summer of ’66 I moved back to Ann Arbor to help settle his estate with his diseased Father, and to help move Stosh into Grandpa’s last home in Brighton. For this he found me my first job after having just graduated high school in So. Pasadena, CA. in the summer of 1966. I have thought about making a website about all of Stan’s, work for Argus over the years as well as for his Father, Louis. Machinework Genius’s both, and to document their Fine Metal Casting work as well. I not only became an Architect for Disney, but like Stosh’s Father I was a master metal-caster and clock/watch maker. We used to call Stan’s dad ‘GRAMPA’ all those years as little Ann Arbor Boys, before he died in ’63…He called me JONI, I was the one that cleaned out Grampa Ruffins incrediable machine shop in the basement of 562 S. 7th St. Most of the machinery went to Stan’s new home where his Father, Louis lived, when he passed away, at the U of M Hosp. Louis at that time had retired from a 30 year career as an instructor at the U of M sand-casting Foundary, just blocks away from Argus. This is a long dissertation, but I just want everyone to know how proud I am of Stosh. His Father immigrated to Staten Is. when he was only 17 during WW1. In 1917 he came here from a place known as the Italian Swiss Colony. He was truly a genius and no one knew it at the time when they changed his name from Rufino to Ruffin, spotted him 50 bucks in WW1 and told him to just go “hit the road boy”…JONI

      1. Great site and amazing shares. I own a vast collection of slides -took upon myself to preserve my late father in law legacy in pictures. These are in 593 slide magazines. I figure all is about 900 slides. If anyone knows of a projector capable of loading these (the slides are individually encased in an aluminum frame and therefore would be hard to find a player other than an Argus) but if you know of a solution to this I would love to hear about it.
        Thanks – Fer

  4. Great insight into the Argus history. I just missed out on a couple great Argus cameras at an estate sale. He owner had a friend he was saving them for. However, he had the Argus Slide Projector Model # 58 with a large box of slides for only one $$. My wife bought it and I cleaned it up. The downside is – there is no power cord for it. Does anyone know if Sylvania or Argus still makes the power cords for these old machines? 423-836-0213.

  8. I found this link too late to contribute from my father’s collection of Argus photos. He got his camera in Paris, probably in 1939 (it could be a C2, I don’t know…), and took it to war and afterwards used it to start up as a street photographer. There was no film for sale in the UK after the war, but he knew some people in the movie business and he’d get cans of movie film from them. This film had cones along the edges instead of sprocket holes, and he would cut it down and make sprocket holes to fit the Argus – all by touch in the dark.

After all that handling the pictures were sometimes very foggy, but nobody ever complained.

The Argus still lives in a leather case my father made from an old German ammo (?) case, but recently a bit of the shutter mechanism came apart (jumped inside the camera body). I have the bit that jumped out (it’s a white-metal blip with a little ?copper shaft) but don’t know how to fix it.

Any advice would be very welcome.

      1. SCOTT, THERE ARE SEVERAL MODELS OF THE 300 PROJECTOR. ANYTHING THAT USED A 300 WATT LAMP WAS CALLED A 300. YOU NEED TO LOOK ON THE PROJECTOR AND FIND THE PRECISE MODEL #, SUCH AS 504, 535, OR PBB 300. ONCE IDENTIFIED YOU CAN THEN FIND OUT WHAT LAMP TO USE. IF YOU HAVE A PBB 300, UNDER NO CONDITIONS DO YOU WANT TO USE LAMP TYPE CYC/CYM. THIS IS A T-10 LAMP AND YOU WILL PROBABLY BREAK THE REAR HEAT LENS IN THE PROJECTOR. YOU NEED A T-8 1/2 LAMP. WE HAVE THE CORRECT LAMP FOR ALL THE ARGUS PROJECTORS. YOU MAY E MAIL ME DIRECT IF YOU LIKE. mY EMAIL IS rakinsey@mail.com. Send me a picture of the unit if you cannot identify and I can do that for you
        MANY THANKS

    1. I saw an old Argus camera a bit newer than this at an antique store and almost bought it, except I’m not sure I will ever shoot any more film other than 35mm again. It looks like digital is here to stay, but I wish there was something as good as trusty old Kodachrome still around.

  47. Really cool page, Lots of good info. I have an Argus 580 executive projector in a solid walnut cabinet. I purchased it in 1962 in Chicago and it is still in perfect working order. I have trays for slides for it also. I would like to find a good home for this rear projection unit. Contact me at y26saturn@tampabay.rr.com if interested.

  48. I have Argus 750 movie projector that is in excellent physical shape. Motor works, lamp works, varispeed works. However, it does not thread. So its free to whomever wants it. Really great mechanics inside it. Shame that they dont build stuff like this anymore. email me at t.zimmerman@sbcglobal.net

  49. have an argus movie projector model # 42001 but my movie reels are a little too big for the spindle shaft and I need a take up reel any help out there

    1. Look on eBay for reels. You may be trying to use a Super 8 reel on a Regular 8mm. Better yet, you may be able to find a Super 8 to 8mm spindle adapter. In a pinch, I’ve made my own adapter, using a McDonald’s straw, a piece of shishkabob skewer (for the slot(s) ) and some electrical tape to hold it all together, so it’s removable without getting ‘sticky’ on the spindle. When in doubt, there’s always duct tape too…

      1. …as I further recall, I used a piece of tube from a can of dust off, and wrapped the spindle with electrical tape thick enough to hold it, then taped a single piece of the tubing and wrapped enough tape to hold it to grab the reel. I’d lost the adapter that came with my Eumig projector, and didn’t want to buy an expensive adapter for a just few film reels.

  51. Yes, they do have the capacity for 36 slides, but I no longer have the projector or papers on it, so no information on it. The Argus magazines have the number 593. I could do some research on theAirquipt magazines. However, we were able to use both on the projector that we had.

The movie projector is Argus Model Holiday dual 848.

Again, what are they worth and where could sell them?

    Thanks for your help.

  56. Recently went to visit father in law and he wanted to show old family slides on Argus 500 automatic projector which is in perfect working order. He has slides in 12 x Argus 587 (60 per tray). Neither he or I could figure out how to load these into automatic tray. Has 2 opposite side fully closed, 1 side open and opposite side 2 side closed strips with equal distant open in middle. Couldn’t work out how push lever fitted. FIL said he had been successful before but forgotten how. I have been Googling several times but can only find the Airequipt/Argus 36 magazines on YouTube working. Can anyone advise?

Just hate to see something he obviously loved left to do nothing in this world except sit in its case. Has slides and looks all to be here.
