Lake of the Clouds is in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, which was established in 1945 and is Michigan’s largest state park. The “Porkies” are located 15 miles west of Ontonagon in the western Upper Peninsula, and the 60,000 acre park features virgin timber, secluded lakes, and miles of wild rivers and streams. The Wikipedia Porcupine Mountains entry says that the Porcupine Mountains were so named by the native Ojibwa people because their silhouette had the shape of a porcupine. I first saw the Lake of the clouds on a early morning late in the month of July. The dawn had just broken. There was a light fog covering the lake. The sky was an orange, purple, blue, white. It was truly a lake in the clouds. Spectacularly Awesome!

I camped at the lone cabin near the shore in 1977; it looks just as beautiful in these pictures as it did then. The drive there was also enjoyable as we viewed very small town life far away from the cities. The area is simply gorgeous.
