Reflections of the Past, photo by the pentax hammer.
Gary says:
Yeah, I know… everyone in Grand Rapids has taken a photograph of this. But how many of them did it the way I did? Leaning against a lamppost, hand holding a camera to capture 3 RAW shots, without a tripod? NOW you are only talking about half of the residents of Grand Rapids!
The old building is the beautiful McKay Tower. The new building is… well… just another glass building :-)
This is one of the best photos I’ve seen in a long time. While not normally a fan of HDR, Gary is able to show how HDR can be used in a way that enhances the natural beauty of the photo. Stunning!

Hey, my office is in that building. It may not be much to look at, but the view up Monroe Center of McKay, Maya Lin’s Ecliptic and the GRAM is outstanding!!

Thanks Darrin! I really appreciate the compliment!
Greedo, what is the name of the glass building? I didn’t mean any offense calling it just another glass building… even though it is another of many glass buildings ;) I’m sure the view is great! I’ve remodeled a lot of downtown GR buildings… the view is always cool!

No worries, we all call it the National City Building, since it’s the largest tenant. Although inside is the CVB, AON Corp. and a couple law firms and a PR firm. It’s owned by Grubb/Ellis.
Architecturally, I agree, it’s pretty insignificant, but one thing the designer paid attention to was the height in reference to the old Pantlind hotel (which you can see peeking through the right side of the image). At only 10 floors, it doesn’t tower over, or diminish the historic building across the street, and actually reflects the facade very nicely.
Sure it’s a snoozer, but it fits.

I’ve never seen this picture, (I haven’t been to Grand Rapids in a long time, either) so don’t feel bad. It’s still an awesome shot!
