This week I’ve started to see people posting their finds in the various morel hunting groups I’m in, so it’s time to declare the 2021 season officially underway! Michigan in Pictures has a ton of information about Michigan morels, including hunting tips & how to avoid the mildly toxic false morel.
Rick took this photo back in May of 2014 near Boyne City (home to a bangin’ morel festival) and you can see more in his Morel Mushrooms taken within 5 miles of Boyne City gallery on Flickr.

Thanks again for your fine articles and pictures.

I totally hear you, but they do consider morels one of the “fearless five” mushrooms that don’t have a deadly look-a-like (through there are false morels):

It’s safest to only pick the ones you definitely recognize; usually blacks (earliest), whites & greys & some whites that are actually yellowish in color. There are tons of others that are safe, in different shapes, colors & locations, but there are tons that aren’t. No sense becoming a statistic…
