These little guys change colors depending on their surroundings and the temperature. Here he is just starting to change from gray to green. This is a full grown adult about two inches in length. With legs extended he is about 5-6 inches long.

Our good friends at the UM Animal Diversity Web have more information about the Gray Treefrog (including pictures and sounds).

  1. We see these around our house frequently. The other day, I found one in our unused firewood. I captured it (very easy, actually) and showed it to my 7-yr-old son. As we handled it (~60 sec), we noticed bright yellow coloration in all four “armpits.” Very striking. Put him/her in the very moist woods behind the house and waved good bye. We’ll see more.

  2. It was late spring and we kept, what we thought was a wood pecker calling out to mate, very loud chirping sound which we could hear in our house even with the windows closed. Come to find out the next couple weeks we kept hearing the chirp and and then another returning the chirp right next our pool. I took my flashlight and scanned the pool and low and behold I had 3 tree frogs, that decided to make my solar cover their lilly pad. Biggest noise makers I have ever heard very cool to watch croak though. We have named the largest Mr. Big Noise. The next morning I woke up and looked at my solar cover and found hundreds of eggs on it, not so cool.
